According to one version, the history of velvet is connected with the city of Manchester, that’s why velvet is called «manchester». According to another version, velvet was developed in France and was called «corde dur roi», — «King cloth».
Only the persons of royal blood and wealthy nobles could afford velvet clothes because velvet was a very expensive material. Fabrication and processing was kept secret and handed down from father to son.
